Hi friends and happy New Year! I’m so happy to kick off the year with a photo story and collaboration with a lovely friend of mine in Florida. As the years go by, there are many things that have become near and dear to my heart, but one that has remained a constant is my undying love for the beach. For those of you who don’t know, I spent the majority of my life in Florida, a convenient 20 minute drive from one of the most beautiful beaches in America. No but seriously, Anna Maria Island was voted the #3 island in America and it’s sister beach, Siesta Key, was rated the #1 beach by Tripadvisor. Pretty marvelous, am I right?
My friend and talented swimwear designer, Sabrina, is no stranger to the ways of #BeachLife. She and I went to the same high school and now she resides in sunny Key West, producing some of the prettiest handmade swimsuits around. I was thrilled to be able to collab with her during my latest trip to Florida and show off two of my fav pieces from her collection. Her designs are so colorful and fun, they definitely had me feeling some major mermaid vibes.
It’s always so inspiring to watch people discover their passions and really chase their dreams – which is why I wanted Sabrina to share a little more about her swimwear line so you could get a glimpse into her vibrant, underwater world…
Q: When did you know you wanted to be a swimwear designer?
A: I did some swimwear projects in school, not really expecting to do anything in that field at the time – but I really enjoyed it and was surprised by how much I liked doing it. So what better way to keep the good vibes rolling than by starting a swimwear line of my own!
Q: What’s the most challenging thing about starting your own business?
A: Actually “starting” believe it or not! lol It’s super scary to put yourself out there not knowing what’s going to happen. Also, learning all the other aspects of running a business besides designing and making a product.
Q:What inspires your designs?
A: It’s different things all the time…from music to nature or different experiences. It only takes a second for something to trigger a great idea.
Q: If you could give one piece of advice to someone trying to pursue their dreams, what would it be?
A: Don’t let your doubts consume you, just take a leap of faith and do it. If things don’t turn out how you like, learn from it and try a different approach. Here’s a little quote I think of to keep me motivated: “If everything happens for a reason, there’s no such thing as mistakes.” I think it’s by Mary Kate Olsen. I read it in Cosmo Girl when I was like 12, lol, but it still keeps me going.
Q: What’s next for Sabrina West Swimwear?
A: I have some new prints and styles in the works plus I’m also planning on adding a cover-up and other fun resort wear!
You can shop all her pieces (which happen to be on sale right now!) HERE and be sure to give her a follow on Instagram HERE. I know it’s a little odd to do a swimwear post in the winter but honestly, if you live in the northeast and are anything like me, you’re probably planning your next warm weather vacay asap. hehe
