4 Secrets For Glowing Skin


Everywhere you look – television commercials, movies, print ads, Instagram, there are women with beautiful, glowing skin. To be fair, most of this could be attributed to killer makeup and lots of photoshop, but there are some lucky ladies who are graced with naturally flawless complexions. I am not one of those women.

When I was in high school I suffered from really terrible acne. No matter how many chemicals I put on my face that were designed to zap the eff out of the nasty things, it was a never ending battle. It wasn’t until I was in college that my hormones must have settled down and my breakouts became fewer and further between. Eventually my skin was completely clear and now I very rarely get any blemishes.

All this being said, my skin is still far from perfect. I have larger pores (thanks genetics) and now that I’m in my late 20s I notice a few fine lines appearing on my forehead and around my eyes – ah!! That’s why I’ve been trying to pay even more attention to how I care for my skin – what products are total bogus and which ones deliver miraculous results. I’ve yet to discover any miracle worker but the following 4 tips are what I try to stick by in order to give my skin a fighting chance. The more I follow these “secrets” the more my skin reaps the benefits. Then again, the days when I’m drinking endless cups of coffee or having one too many glasses of wine with friends, my skin suffers.

We all know we’re supposed to drink at least 8 cups of water per day but I find that this is much easier said than done. I discovered that I end up drinking a lot more water if I jazz it up a bit… ya know, like all those fancy ‘detox’ waters that you’ve seen floating around the internet. Those actually work. I love adding one herb and one fruit so the flavor isn’t too overwhelming. Mint and lime, basil and lemon, basil and strawberry… the combos are endless.

Invest In A Good Moisturizer yuni-beauty

I love trying out new skincare brands and very rarely stick with the same regimen for too long. Maybe I’m ADD when it comes to skincare products but what can I say? There are so many out there that I want to try! One of my new favorites is from YUNI Beauty. I’ve been using their Active Calm Face Serum and Active Calm Moisturizer twice a day for the past month and my skin has never felt this soft.

Both products are plant-based, cruelty-free and feature a blend of certified organic Buriti Oil and Fair Trade Green Tea extract. As my friends can attest, I’m pretty obsessed with smoothies. They can be made in less than 10 minutes and typically pack a powerful punch of antioxidants, vitamins, healthy fats and omega 3 fatty acids. This smoothie is one of my absolute favorites! Not only does it taste decadent but it’s also filled with ingredients that are super beneficial for healthy, glowing skin.


  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1/2 cup fresh blueberries
  • 1/4 cup plain fat-free greek yogurt
  • 5-6 fresh strawberries
  • 1 tsp honey
  • 1 tbsp flax seeds
  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk 
  • 1 cup of ice

So how does this help your skin? Let’s break it down:

  • Blueberries are one of the most nutrient dense foods in the world and are packed with antioxidants! These antioxidants help to reduce sun and environmental damage caused by “free radicals”
  • Flax seeds provide incredible anti-inflammatory benefits, which help to minimize acne, skin irritation or redness
  • Flax seeds also help to control the body’s natural oil levels – making skin super supple and soft
  • Bananas offer up a hefty dose of potassium and Vitamins E and C
  • Almond milk is rich in both Vitamin E and Zinc – the key nutrients for keeping skin clear and blemish free

I read an article recently that said working up a sweat is pretty much the same thing as getting a mini facial – because your pores dilate and expel all the nasty dirt and oil that gets trapped during the day. Sounds gross but I totally believe it. My skin always looks and feel so amazing after a hot yoga class + a shower + a quick facial mask (see which one I love here).

No matter how you decide to “get moving”, whether that be yoga, a brisk walk around your neighborhood, a trip to the gym or a random dance sesh in the comfort of your own home, there’s no denying that daily exercise really helps give skin a beautiful glow. Getting the blood moving helps your body deliver the proper nutrients (from that smoothie earlier!) to your skin – which over time will restore skin suppleness, elasticity and collagen production. Less wrinkles? Count me in.
