Juice Cleanse Survival Tips + Giveaway!

Earlier this month, after Bay and I returned from our lovely trip to San Fran (read about it here) I prepared myself for a full Sunday spent relaxing, doing yoga, and detoxing via a 24 hr. juice cleanse. As a total juice cleanse newbie, I’ll admit that I really had no idea what to expect and although I was super excited for the healthy boost of goodness, I was really nervous that I wouldn’t be able to handle it. Luckily Bay offered to be my partner in crime and forego solid foods for the day alongside me!

We received a super colorful assortment of healthy juices from Jus By Julie, a local company that I absolutely adore. Created by health coach, Julie Maleh, their juices are super tasty – apparently all of the flavors are taste-tested by her family of “picky eaters” and they’re refreshingly different from most other juices I’ve tried. My fav was the Chia Berry and Bay surprisingly loved the Matcha Chia despite his indifference towards regular matcha tea. Go figure. lol

Bonus, the juices are never cold-pressed, which I LOVE because:

A) You get 100% of the nutrition from the array of fruits and veggies packed inside each bottle

B) They end up tasting more like smoothies…and who doesn’t like smoothies? Am I right?

Bay and I each had 6 juices (5 of the same and 2 different ones) to get us through the day:

  • Sweet Spin – kale, spinach, pineapple, banana, mango and rice milk
  • Spicy Lemonade – lemon, maple syrup, cayenne pepper and water
  • Dr. Green – kale, spinach, celery, apple, ginger, lemon and rice milk
  • Chia Berry – chia seeds, pomegranate, strawberry, lemon, water and agave
  • Island Coconut – coconut meat, coconut milk, dates and cinnamon
  • Matcha Chia – matcha, spinach, chia seeds, apple, mango, cinnamon, pineapple, lemon, and almond milk
  • Extreme Greens – spinach, kale, orange, pineapple, hemp seeds, lime and water

Even though it was a total struggle (the cravings for sugar, carbs and burgers were SO real and made us both extra cranky) I’m happy to report that we were able to make it the full 24hrs! We just won’t mention the part where I scarfed down way too much chocolate ice cream and pasta the next day… just keepin’ it real guys. 😜

We both learned a lot from our day of detox and agreed that if we were to do it again, we would want to try out the 3 day cleanse so we could truly flush out all the built up toxins in our bodies. Luckily Jus By Julie is offering a 3 Day Jus Cleanse + 12 booster shots for $120 and free shipping, as part of their MidYear Resolution Campaign. Check it out here.

If you’re new to the juice cleanse experience and need a few pointers, Bay and I came up with some tips that’ll hopefully make things a little easier for you!

1. Do yourself a favor and pre-cleanse

You can definitely still make it through a whole cleanse without slowly removing sugars, carbs and fatty treats from your diet beforehand, but it makes things a whole lot harder! I seriously couldn’t get visions of bread, chocolate and iced lattes out of my head the entire day because that’s what my body was used to getting on the regular. Do yourself a favor, and start eating cleaner prior to your cleanse. You’ll thank yourself later.

2. Drink plenty of water!

You’d think that if you’re on a liquid diet all day that hydration wouldn’t be an issue right? Surprise! It totally is. Even though you’re consuming blended fruits and veggies, it’s still super important to drink water throughout the day to help your body flush out the toxins. I got a pretty nasty headache about 3 juices in, but once I downed a glass or two of water I felt so much better.

3. Take it easy… but not TOO easy

Try to plan your cleanse for a day (or days) that you’re not going to be participating in super strenuous activity.  Light jogs, casual walks or slow yoga sessions are fine and may even give you more energy, but anything more than that and you could tire your body out. This being said you don’t want to sit on the couch doing nothing but binge watching Netflix either… because when you get bored, you’re more likely to crave ALL the junk food.

4. Get some fresh air

On the evening of our juice cleanse, Bay and I started becoming intolerably moody. We decided that the best way to clear our heads would be to take a nice long walk around the neighborhood and enjoy some much needed fresh air. By the time we made it down to the park that’s several blocks from our apartment, I felt like a brand new person. That may sound a bit dramatic, but in all honesty the light outdoor adventure had me feeling refreshed and energized. Thank you nature… and city streets.

5. Reward yourself at the end

Perhaps one of the best ways to get through your juice cleanse is to envision a reward at the end, health benefits not included. Whether it be that you’re going to treat yourself to a gigantic stack of blueberry pancakes the next day or partake in an online shopping spree (thank goodness for Amazon Prime), be sure to treat yo’ self to something special as a reward for your healthy commitment and self-control. You deserve it!
